Chief Justice Raises Questions About Governors’ Role and a Potential Shift in the India Alliance
In a recent development, the Supreme Court has given its nod to the Union government’s practice of governing opposition-ruled states through appointed Governors. This issue came to the forefront in cases involving the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to relinquish the fight and a case pursued by Panchapat.
Chief Justice Saramari questioned the involvement of Governors in matters that seemingly fall outside their limited constitutional duties. The Court’s scrutiny highlighted the contentious role of Governors in opposition-ruled states and raised fundamental questions about their mandate.
While there have been indications that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi may be instrumental in leveraging Governors for political advantage, the Court’s condemnation has, so far, focused solely on the Governors themselves.
A lasting solution to this issue could hinge on a change in the leadership at the national level. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has expressed its commitment to addressing and resolving this matter within the framework of the India Alliance, a coalition of opposition parties.
Andal Priyadarshini, in a detailed interview, sheds light on this evolving situation, offering insights into the implications of the Supreme Court’s decision and the potential for a realignment of political forces within the India Alliance.
